Reviews

From the opening lines of the first track until the end of the CD, I was amazed at the depth of each and every song. I loved the sound of the guitar, and the honestly of Cainan’s really nice voice. One of my favorite songwriters, Billy Joe Shaver, once said “Simplicity don’t need greasing.” This easily describes Cainan’s CD. I wouldn’t change a thing.... Two Shows and A Plane Ride

It was Rustlers and button ups if i remember rite
face slightly wrinkled and his hair turnin white
he used to wake me in the mornin we'd work till the night
he taught me to drive a truck and to stay outta fights
We traveled up and down the eastcoast stopped in every littletown
he told me not to smoke dope when the age rolled around
he said hard work and fast horse were good for the soul
he loved ol' Dean Martin but he hated rock n roll
Now it's two shows and a plane ride and i can go home
knowin that your gone i just feel so alone
i'd rather sit in this honky tonk chokin on my tears
then look back at the memories of so many years
they told me on the phone how this shit all went down
a thousand spectators in a little amish town
the blood stained vision is stuck in my mind
sometimes when i'm alone it still makes me cry
never told you i was sorry for the bad things i done
never thanked you for stopping me when i wanted to run
taught me something for everyday i had you near
wish somehow you could come back and help me get past the fear
Now it's two shows and a plane ride and i can go home
knowin that your gone i just feel so alone
i'd rather sit in this honky tonk chokin on my tears
then look back at the memories of so many years
Well I didnt make the funeral, couldn't make myself go
Dried out a week later went back on the road
try to live my life like I remember yours to be
got a beautiful daughter now, Damn i wish you could see her

For Better or Worse (Shiavo's Blues)

Been lying in this bed going on 12 years
doctors say i feel no pain cause they cant see my tears
been a few to fight for me and some others just turn away
for the grace of god go I is all that I can pray
cause i never done you no wrong and i never cursed your name
but the day they pulled the plug the whole world felt your shame

Chorus

you do unto others as you would have them do
how about if we trade places and i can be like you
cause my heart is beatin and i breathe the air you do
i wouldn't wish this on no one huh not even you
did you not really mean it when you said better or worse
when did you give up on putting my feelings first
does the end justify your means will you be able to sleep at night
or have you convinced your self that what you've done is right
I'll be fine cause i'm going to a place you'll never know
cause i've heard the people who kill end up down below

Chorus

Now i'll say goodbye to you as I starve here in this bed
my soul leaking from my heart and these tubes coming from my head
what gives you the rite to say who lives and dies
when i think of who you'll answer to i hang my head and cry
cause i never done you wrong and i never cursed your name
but the day they pulled this plug the whole world felt your shame

Chorus

Lost and Found

spent my life runnin down this road
chasing dreams i'll never find
and the thing i really need the most
is to find my peace of mind
you blew in like a summer breeze
helped me clear away the haze
the road we travel is a rocky one
but you fill it with sunny days
we're rollin down this highway
i dont know just where we're bound
and i look back at how my life was
how i was lost but now i'm found
our love is like this highway
a never ending road
you flying above in heaven
and pulled me from below
i know we have our problems
a carefree love is just careless
but we'll always care for eachother
for that i feel i'm blessed

Chorus

Grandpa Jones

He was 53 back in 81
rolled himself around couldnt have much fun
his days of a rock star were all long gone
and he didnt have time for his only grandson
i'd follow him when he'd go out to smoke
he'd sit on the deck drinking bourbon and coke
momma didnt want him to teach me a thing
she said he was a waste of a man onry and mean
did jerry lee like the way you played 2/4
did hank only have you cause he knew you could score
they told me you were crazy but i wanted more
momma said when you died heaven locked the front door
he told me stories of honky tonks and old bar flies
said the music was one thing that never dies
drank beer in the mornin and old crow at night
bragged of the days when he won every fight
well latter that summer my gramps lost his life
left behind 6 kids a dog and a wife
he never cared about money if he could get high
he spent to many years just tryin to get by
he was crippled by his habits but i didnt care
seemed bigger than life even in a wheelchair
and i'd sit and listen to every story he told
i learned how the world left him worn out and cold
well i have grow up now and made my own way
still wish i'd known you back in your day
but my heart knows they let you in
cause just being an outlaw really isn't a sin

Mexico

pulled out the drive in a rusty old jeep
looking for the devil where his beer was cheap
two hundred miles down that old highway
friday nights we'd make our way
roll into nogales around a quarter to nine
for these young gringos hell was easy to find
knew all the bad spots in that border town
spend the weekend pourin tequilla down

Chorus

singin oh spanish rose
how you got here only heaven knows
big brown eyes and your jet black hair
sometimes i wish i was still there
in old mexico
we had our youth and nothing else to lose
we had a taste for the women and booze
crawl out a disco at the break of dawn
sleep till dusk then be back on the run
old bars on gravel roads
covered with words we didnt know
seemed so easy to have a good time
with a shot glass and a wedge of lime

Chorus

monday morning the pain began
looked like survivors of custer's last stand
draw straws to see who'd drive the jeep
and watch the 3 lucky ones get some sleep
pull up the drive cussin the sun
this was the part never was much fun
sleepy town seemed such a bore
working monday to friday so we could go back for more

On The Run

Worked all day in this hot texas sun
been ten years now since i made my run
packed my shit and i said goodbye
never looked back to see if momma cried
hitched all the way to san jose
took a week for me to get away
road a diesel rig that was heading east
was having second thoughts to say the least

Chorus

cause being 17 and on the run
sounds romantic but it aint much fun
had some money when i made my start
by colorado i was down to heart
worked awhile in denver washing cars
doubled my pay hustling at bars
shooting dice or shooting pool
never was hard for me to play a fool
bought an amtrack ticket to OKC
wonder if anyone is missing me
doing well and i'm on my own
wonderin if momma's waiting by the phone

Chorus

from oklahoma i bounced around
lookin for work where it could be found
worked an oilfield in abileene
started the day i turned eighteen
and i worked all day in the hot texas sun
now ten years since i made my run
packed my shit and i said goodbye
found out today my momma died

Lonely Hotel

packed my bags again tonight
leavin with the morning sun
hate to have to kiss you both goodbye
this lifes always got me on the run

Chorus

another night away from home
in a lonely old hotel
another day away from you
in my own living hell
been up and down this road
seen all i care to see
feel like i'm losing touch
with what matters most to me

Chorus

you're at home with mom
probably watching your cartoons
while i'm lying on this bed
trying to picture your bedroom

Chorus

Well I gotta leave you now
if only for alittle while
but having these thoughts of you
help me make it through each night

Chorus

Roadside Reflections

Dont know where i'm going
or how long i'll be gone
these roadside reflections
keep pushing me on
i see her in the headlights
of every oncoming car
way i feel now man
i won't make it far

verse

doing 80 miles an hour down I-35
thinking Reyanosa where i'll start my new life
rent an upstairs apartment on an old cornerstore
spend all my money on jim beam and whores
i know if i came back you'd just hurt me again
sometimes in the game of love nobody wins

Chorus

got some friends in el paso maybe i'll head out there
the load on my heart is gettin hard to bear
or go north to durango where i went to school
hate to have to tell them you played me for a fool
or how much i still love you and how i begged you to stay
think i'll head straight west till i splash in the bay

Chorus

now i know how it feels to lose the last hand
put it allin the middle on an old gold band
you took it quite well far as i can see
think i'll load up my heart aches and go to tennesse

Chorus

Ramblers Dream

It's saturday night in a podunk town
all the boys are gathering round
they're gonna ride this city to a blaze of glory
they pick up their pay rite after the shows
and what they dont drink is going straight up their nose
but they make it back home before the day breaks

Chorus

they're just looking for some good times
and they can be so hard to find
and they get loud when they're blowin off that steam
they wouldn't trade it for nothin
they're livin a ramblers dream
now old dave west is sittin at the bar
got so much talent man he shoulda went far
but he's got a little problem with the needle
and there's john cool he's poppin a top
been workin all day on that dirty big top
he's got two ex-wives on his payroll

Chorus

now i'm not sayin this lifes all bad
i look back at the times i've had and man
i wouldn't trade mine either
but this road is long and it aint always paved
steady workin to an early grave but at the end
of the day i feel somethin

Chorus

Ruiodoso Moon

G D DsAmC D G
`sittin on this hill staring at a riadosa moon
wasting my time watching the catus flowers bloom
I never really wanted to walk away
I guess we just ran out of things to say
And love shouldn't feel like prison walls
should feel like the leaves turning in fall
new mexico sunset sets the sky to fire red
sad to think the love we shared is dead
we paid the piper a hefty cost
we played the game but we still lost
now we have gone our seperate ways
and i just pray for sunny days
new mexico sunset sets the sky to fire red
sad to think the love we shared is dead
someday when you're old and gray
who knows you might pass my way
waiting on a ruiodoso moon
time drags on in this mountain town
you're new king wears his crown
I wear these scars on my heart
and count the days we've been apart
